The dialogue and item descriptions of Bloodborne heavily imply that the widespread abuse of the Healing Blood in Yharnam is responsible for the transformation of its residents and religious leaders into hideous beasts, even if this metamorphosis is augmented by the proximity of the moon. The subtext, however, appears to tell a story of addiction to intoxicating substances that unleash one's innermost and basest instincts. In this episode, we continue to explore the Healing Blood's parallels to Victorian anesthesia and the beastly transformation's connection to R.L. Stevenson's "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." Although the game treats beasts in this metaphor as addicts hooked on intoxicating surgical anesthetics, we'll see in later episodes how beasts are much more strongly treated as a metaphor for cadavers. Although these portrayals seem contradictory, these two presentations are closely linked: The bodies of surgical patients and cadavers were the training grounds for medical scholars of the 1700-1800s, much like those we find in the School of Mensis and the College of Byrgenwerth.
