I’ve turned comments off here out of respect for a close friend and crewmate. Greg is stepping into a new level of responsibility on this journey, and doing exactly what these passages are about — learning, gaining experience, and growing into the role. Offshore sailing is one of the best teachers there is, and there’s no substitute for real miles and real decisions. He’s also working through some personal things right now, and I wanted this space to stay supportive and positive while he continues that process. Thanks for being part of this adventure and for understanding. The journey continues. — Tom We leave Hilo, Hawaii, and point the bow toward Honolulu — not for the scenery, but to get closer to stores and supplies so we can deal with the repairs that have been stacking up. On the way, things take another turn. We tear the mainsail — badly. Bad enough that it’s beyond repair. With no proper replacement available, we end up setting a sail from a J/45. It works… but it’s far from the right sail for a Catana 55. Between stops, there’s plenty of boat and engine work, long days chasing problems, and tough decisions about timing. Eventually, and somewhat reluctantly, we head back offshore toward California. The forecast isn’t comforting — a large front pushing down from the north, and a tropical system building from the south. Not ideal conditions to be threading a path between. So we go. Let’s see how this plays out. Boat deliveries are a different kind of adventure. There’s no finish line you can see, no shore to pull up on when things get hard. Just watch systems, shifting weather, long night watches, and the quiet weight of responsibility when you’re keeping a boat — and everyone on it — moving safely across an ocean. This series is about what doesn’t make it into the glossy sailing videos: breakdowns, fatigue, tough calls, and the moments of calm in between. It’s messy, demanding, and absolutely unforgettable — offshore sailing at its rawest. From freshwater to bluewater, paddles to sails — the journey continues. 👉 THANK YOU for being part of this adventure. Your support truly keeps me moving.
