I visited Maido Café Shangri-La in Kiryu, Japan (Gunma Prefecture). It's a one-of-a-kind maid café run entirely by maid volunteers 65 and older. This once-a-month pop-up is a community initiative by the NPO Kids Valley to combat isolation and loneliness among Japan’s aging senior and elderly population. This café takes the wholesome side Japanese maid culture and mixes it with spiritual themes of aging and death seen across various Japanese beliefs on the afterlife, like Sanzu no Kawa, Okiyome, and Gokuraku Jyoudo. These heartwarming senior citizen maids serve bento lunch curated by a local university, and make sure it's extra delicious with a “moe moe kyun!" The maids actively encourage guests to talk to each other, so you'll be sure to walk away with new friends! If you’re curious about Japan’s aging society, rebuilding community connection, or what it's like to be surrounded by kawaii maids as sweet as your grandma, this is the place to visit on your next Japan trip!
