Devi Mahamaya has always stood by Righteousness. Yet in the ongoing war between Ramchandra and Ravan, she initially protected Ravan as her own child. His intense devotion to Bhadrakali had earned him her divine protection. To overcome this boon, Shri Ram invoked Devi Durga, seeking her blessings to remove her shield from Ravan. But worshipping Devi Katyayani in Autumn was unusual — and so, this unique invocation came to be known as Akalbodhan (untimely awakening). While offering 108 lotuses to the Goddess, Shri Ram reflected on the Mahatmya of the Divine Mother — who is sometimes the Creator, sometimes the Protector, and sometimes the Destroyer! In nature, she manifests as vegetation — and Nabapatrika is the embodiment of Mahamaya in nine sacred plants: • Brahmani in the Banana plant • Raktadantika in Pomegranate • Chamunda in Arum • Kalika in Taro • Kartiki in Jayanti • Shiva in the Wood Apple tree • Lakshmi in the Paddy (Rice) plant • Uma in Turmeric • Sokrahita in the Ashoka tree By invoking these nine Divine Mothers, did Shri Ram succeed in establishing Durga Puja during an untimely season?
