The Adventures of Kintarō
Join us online for our family program Stories and Art, where we tell stories and look at art together! This month’s story, “The Adventures of Kintarō,” is a Japanese folktale about a boy with great strength. The story is paired with two 19th-century prints by Totoya Hokkei in the Yale University Art Gallery’s collection: “Kintarō Struggling with the Giant Carp (Kintarō to Koi)” and “Oniwakamaru Subduing the Giant Carp.” As you listen to the story, notice what details you see in the artwork. Then, using a piece of paper and a pencil, draw Kintarō’s reunion with one of the other animals in the story when they are older. We can’t wait to see what you create!
