This typically "high-energy" rendition of "Cold Irons Bound" was filmed in Chicago, IL, October 27, 2001. The packed "Windy City" audience, it's no surprise, reacted enthusiastically to the lyrics' reference to "the winds of Chicago." The song's appearance on the set list that night was not particularly related to the location of the concert, though. During his 1997 and 1998 tours in support of "Time Out of Mind," Dylan performed "Cold Irons Bound" more frequently than any other track from the album other than "Love Sick." "Cold Irons Bound" remained a staple of Dylan's tours through 2002, featuring in the mix of numbers more often than not. It continued to be a dominant features of every year's set list through 2006, after which it disappeared for three years except for a lone 2007 performance. After that relatively brief retirement, "Cold Irons Bound" returned to the rotation in fall 2009, with Dylan again playing what seems to be one of his favorite, hard-edged, blues rave-ups on a regular basis until fall 2011, after which it disappeared from his set lists and to date has not reappeared since. My guess is it's no coincidence that Dylan retired "Cold Irons Bound" around the same time he stopped playing guitar at his shows almost entirely, except for a couple of well-noted, special occasions. I can't imagine he'd enjoy performing it nearly as much as he used to without an electric guitar in hand. The way Dylan plays his guitar and how much fun he's having handling and striking poses with it are among the highlights of this particular captured performance.
