As New Zealanders being in and around the water is part of the fabric of our culture, our identity and whakapapa (genealogy). At Coastguard – Tautiaki Moana, we are on a journey. A journey to strengthen and build upon the relationship that we have with Māori and Pasifika. Two years ago, we were gifted our Ingoa Māori (name) Tautiaki Moana Aotearoa by Te Arawa iwi, a momentous occasion for our organisation. Tautiaki is a word that is similar to Kaitiaki, meaning guardian. The difference is that Tautiaki is based in action – the actions taken provide the guardianship. Tautiaki Moana is not a literal translation of Coastguard New Zealand. Instead it explains the actions we take to ensure that with our help everyone can enjoy Aotearoa New Zealand’s waters safely and with confidence. ❤️ -------------------------- ✨About Coastguard: · Coastguard is a charity powered by over 2,000 volunteers in communities around New Zealand. · Coastguard receives 30% of its funding from central government. The other $18 million is raised each year through the support of members, donors, funders and corporate partners. · Last year Coastguard volunteers gave 273,269 hours to keeping New Zealanders safe on the water. · Volunteer crew on rescue vessels, in our search aircraft and on the end of the radio have been dedicated to saving lives for over 150 years.
