Pakistan-Afghanistan ceasefire unlikely without end to militant support: Analyst

Renewed air strikes on Friday (Feb 27) have put the fragile ceasefire between Pakistan and Afghanistan at risk. Islamabad accuses Kabul of allowing Pakistani militants to operate from Afghan territory – a claim the Afghan government denies. Amin Saikal, adjunct senior fellow at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies of the Nanyang Technological University, tells CNA's Asia First that the truce is unlikely to hold unless support for those militants ends. However, he notes that Afghan leaders may be reluctant to cut ties out of concern the fighters could instead align with the Islamic State group’s regional branch, a rival militant group operating in Afghanistan.
