In this lesson we break down the famous 9-note phrase of legendary jazz drummer Philly Joe Jones. Often referred to as the “Philly 9,” this triplet phrase appears again and again in Jones’ solos and is one of the most recognizable ideas in his vocabulary. In this video we explore how the phrase works rhythmically and how you can use it in trading fours. This rhythmic idea appears again and again in Jones’ solos, especially in the trading fours. In this video, we break the phrase down step by step and explore how it works musically, from the sticking itself all the way to applying it in trading fours. You can watch the video here: 👉 • Philly Joe Jones' Trading 4s on Oleo (Bill... Instead of treating the phrase as just another lick, the goal of this lesson is to understand the musical concept behind it. In the video, you will learn, among other things: • the sticking commonly associated with the Philly Joe 9-stroke • why the nine triplets create a natural three-beat phrase inside 4/4 • how to use the idea inside one-bar, two-bar and four-bar phrases • how the phrase works in trading fours • orchestration ideas around the drum set Throughout the lesson we focus not only on the sticking, but also on the musical elements that make the phrase sound authentic.
