Here is a story in Latin I wrote based on Aesop’s fable 'The wolf and the lamb'. It’s the tale of a lamb drinking water and being falsely accused by a wolf of questionable integrity for disturbing the water. In this version, the wolf has some rather misplaced Ciceronian aspirations. I hope you enjoy it! ⏱ Use TIMESTAMPS to find commentaries: 0:00 "De ira lupina" 0:20 'De me actum est': use it to lament your fate, as characters commonly do in Roman comedy. 0:34 'Me miserum!': to lament using exclamation, put the (pro)noun and adjective in the accusative case. 0:48 'Per oves immortales!': sheep swear by immortal sheep, just as Romans swore by immortal gods ('per deos immortales'). 1:44 Apelles was the most famous Greek painter of antiquity; we don't know how good he was at portraying wolfs of immense beauty, though. 3:44 'Quid agam?': use subjunctive ('agam') to reply to 'Quid agis?', especially if you're angry. 4:12 'O tempora! O mores!': the wolf quotes Cicero, but we're not sure he actually read his works. 5:14 'Sapis' is from 'sapere', which can mean both 'to be wise' and 'to taste well'. 6:54 Other Latin stories The story is part of our free books section in Legentibus, with more commentaries and resources. 📜 Written by Daniel Pettersson | Based on: Phaedrus, Fabulae Aesopiae I.1, 'De lupo et de agno' The best way to learn Latin is to read and listen as much as you can right from the beginning.
