Dr. Jeff talks about birth control pills and IUD's and how to make getting an IUD less painful. http://www.quixana.com Dr. Jeff: Good morning. Jennifer: Good morning Dr. Jeff. I have a question about my birth control. I've been taking the pill for several years. I've been told recently that it's good to change it up a bit, and I was thinking maybe trying out the IUD. Dr. Jeff: Well first of all, if you have been successful with the pill and you like it, there's no real reason to switch it up. The most important thing is that you remember to take it every single day. However if you don't like taking the pill or if you aren't able to remember to take it every single day, switching to an IUD is a very good option. IUD's are very safe, easy, of course they have to be professionally placed by your doctor. Jennifer: Is it painful? Dr. Jeff: A lot of times girls will get cramps during the insertion of the IUD, so a couple little things you can do to prevent that from happening is number one have it inserted while you're on your period. That's when the cervix is a little bit softer, so a little more open, and makes them a bit easier to place it. The other thing you can do is before you go in for the insertion is to take some ibuprofen or aspirin. Any of those anti-inflammatories will actually help reduce cramping. Jennifer: That's really good to know, thank you. Dr. Jeff: You're welcome.
