Wide of plane ready to take off STORYLINE: Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad flew out of Tehran on Sunday morning bound for New York , where he is to attend a UN General Assembly meeting. Before departing Ahmadinejad said the Americans were eager to hear different opinions about the world, and he was looking forward to having the chance to voice them during his trip to the United States, state media reported. "The Iranian nation has clear, determined and solution-offering viewpoints toward the world's ongoing development. The UN is an appropriate place for these viewpoints to be exposed to the world community and policy makers of all countries," Ahmadinejad said. The visit has caused a stir in New York. Tensions are high between Washington and Tehran over U.S. accusations that Iran is secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons. Iran is also accused of helping Shiite militias in Iraq that target U.S. troops - claims Tehran denies. Ahmadinejad said the American people have been denied "correct information," and his visit will give them a chance to hear a different voice, the official IRNA news agency reported. He is scheduled to address the Assembly on Tuesday - his third time attending the New York meeting in three years. He is also set to speak at a Columbia University question-and-answer forum on Monday in New York. His request to lay a wreath at ground zero, site of the World Trade Center 2001 attacks, was denied by city officials and condemned by politicians. Police rejected Ahmadinejad's request, citing construction and security concerns. In an interview to air Sunday on "60 Minutes," Ahmadinejad indicated he would not press the issue but expressed disbelief that the visit would offend Americans. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini also appeared dismayed that the request was rejected. Ahmadinejad's visit to New York is also being debated back home. Some in Iran think his trip is a publicity stint that hurts Iran'simage in the world.
