The Android operating system can be customized for use in many types of embedded systems. Given its extensive feature set, its familiar user interface and its very large developer ecosystem, it's a particularly attractive choice for many designs. Unfortunately, however, its appeal also masks several layers of complexity that make it a daunting task to integrate into most designs. This is further compounded by the development process behind Android which is actually much closer to a classic corporate-led, closed model rather than the typical community-driven model found in most open source projects. This talk will cover the often hard-learned lessons of how to go about deciding whether Android is a good fit for your project, its hardware requirements, the typical SoCs used for it, the BSP quirks you might encounter, selecting and working with development and reference boards, porting Android to your custom hardware, working with the Android sources, navigating and mastering its huge codebase, setting up effective development setups, planning for updates, and other such challenges. As they say, the devil is in the details. Android in that sense is well served: it's a never ending collection of often subtle details.
