This was the final concert of our 2019/20 vocal series, recorded March 18, 2020. It was going to happen in front of a live audience in our concert hall, and then Covid happened. The performance went on as a free, livestreamed performance for an online audience only, in an empty hall. The program begins with Beethoven’s ode to a distant beloved, before the acclaimed young mezzo-soprano Fleur Barron, hailed as “a knockout performer” brings us deep into the world of Gustav Mahler, singing his magnificent Rückert-Lieder. Following intermission, Barron’s “thrillingly dark and rich-veined mezzo” performs selections from another collection of songs by Mahler based on poems of Friedrich Rückert: the heart-rending Kindertotenlieder.
