This is a classic (and classy) Connecticut Shade cigar that has been around for years. Connecticut Shade cigars are not my first choice in terms of body, so it took me a while to get around to trying one of these, and I’m glad I did. First off, let’s clarify the name. Nick Perdomo christened this the “Champagne” because he described the wrapper as “the champagne of Connecticut Shade wrappers,” not because of any use of champagne in making it. The wrapper IS barrel-aged in bourbon – actually Perdomo says it is “triple barrel-aged.” Looking at the cigar, the gold-color cellophane packaging and the ornate band exude class. But at about US$11 for the chunky Grande vitola I smoked, it is affordable luxury. Although I’ve smoked the other Perdomo 10th Anniversary sticks (Maduro and Sun Grown) I was surprised at the excellent construction, draw and burn of the Champagne. Burn was even-Steven all the way from beginning to end, no relights or construction issues of any kind. I do point out in the video a tiny green spot on the wrapper. Although the color green is associated with mold, that generally is not true in cigars. Over 99% of the time, a green spot is the result of a hot (or cold) spot in the curing bundle which allows chlorophyll to stay in the leaf, so that a small spot doesn’t turn brown. In terms of flavor, I really enjoyed this cigar. The four-year aging and quality of tobacco are apparent, and the creamy Connecticut taste was supplemented by a very pleasant undertone of Cashew nuts. All in all, the Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne was an excellent smoking experience. I like the more traditional Connecticut Shade boldness, which this has. Some more recently released Connecticut Shades (examples are the Southern Draw Rose of Sharon and Roma Craft Intemperance) use ligero fillers to amp up the strength a bit – nothing wrong with that, but I prefer the pure mellow smoking experience if I choose to smoke a Connecticut Shade. For body, I rated the Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne 3.5/10 (Mild to Mild-Medium). Overall smoking experience is a 9/10.
