Downed firefighter rescue drills performed by members of the FDNY utilizing the Gen1 BlastMask. BlastMask.com @ffprovinggrounds ・・・ Drill Part: 1 "John Nance Drill" "Lowering a member to locate down member" . This procedure is used as a last resort. If stairways are compromised, if there is no additional access to a basement, and if portable ladders through the hole are not feasible, then this can be a go to move. It's also important for FFPG to mention that the fire conditions will dictate if this procedure is possible. Positioning a hand line is paramount to provide protection to both the down member and firefighters tasked with his removal. Your department and or company must train on this procedure extensively in a controlled environment prior to utilizing it at a true Mayday! . With this being said, the main skill here is lowering a member on rope. What we use is basically 4 tails of rope to lower and raise the member. . Lowering a member steps: 1. Clip terminal knot to harness or substantial object 2. Pass a bight of rope through a carabiner connected to the member being lowered harness 3. Take bight of rope and clip it to another members harness via carabiner or in this case pompier hook. This member acts as an anchor and he will see half the weight 4. Member doing the lowering will use a body belay to lower. . By setting this up and lowering a member down on 4 tails of rope, we essential have a 4:1 mechanical advantage if we need to get him out quick. All we have to do is have four members take each tail of rope and haul slowly! . Note: In this scenario we used 3 members to lower and haul because at John Nance's Fatal Fire they tried raising him with only three firefighters. . This procedure is an advanced skill and should only be performed by experienced and properly trained firefighters. . This is Part 1 of a 4 part series of videos.
