Thyroid cancer is one cancer in which the main treatment would be surgical. Now the surgery involves removal of the thyroid gland. Either half of the thyroid gland is removed when there is suspension, the procedure is called semi thyroidectomy or the cancer is confirmed the entire thyroid may have to be removed the procedure we called a total thyroidectomy. Now when the half of the thyroid gland is removed when there is suspicion of thyroid cancer that particular part is sent for immediate examination what we call it as frozen section and if the frozen section does reveal that the presence of cancer the other part of the thyroid gland is also removed. The main complications of these surgeries are two.1) The nerves which go to voice box are passes very close to the thyroid so entire removal of thyroid may produce a temporary hoarseness of voice.2) The calcium producing glands are four the parathyroids are just behind the thyroid gland. So any handling or any damage to the parathyroids can be a cause to a reduction in the level of calcium in the patient's body which leads to stiffness of arms and legs because of low calcium. Now this radiation goes and concentrate on which ever areas there are thyroid tissues remaining. This might be in the thyroid bed of the operated area or it can be in the lymph nodes. If the radiation is showing concentration in various areas the patient is subsequently given a higher dose of radioiodine to destroy the tissue.In some situations, your doctors may not ask you to take thyroid hormone tablets until after your surgery and radioactive iodine treatment have finished. Radiation and chemotherapy don't have the main role in thyroid cancer. Radiation is very limited role and used to treat residual disease which does not respond to radio iodine therapy. Chemotherapy per side does not have a role in thyroid cancer.
