There was a time when local AM radio was alive and occasionally quite good. WRCS in Ahoskie, NC was one of those stations that could sound better than it should. By the 1970s they were Top 40 with a booming 1000 watts daytime (500 pre-sunrise starting at 6am). C.J. Worthington was probably the biggest personality WRCS ever had and he came along during its final glory years before regional FM stations killed local broadcasting. (This aircheck was made in the WRCS control room, not off a tuner, thus its sharp quality.) Included are a couple of "on the air" photos I made of him in the late 1970s. The color shots of the building and tower were made post-2010, but its the same drafty building from sign-on in 1948. In the control room shot you can see the Gates control board, the cart machines, and turntables. Maybe 10 feet in front of the forward glass window are the AM/FM transmitters. CJ went to find is fame and fortune at WLEE in Richmond, VA and then I lost track. Do YOU know what ever became of him? He had such talent.
