The Elk-Thurston trail is one of the Chilliwack River Valley's most popular hikes. Although not the easiest hike in the valley, the spectacular views from the top make the strenuous trek worthwhile. The trail can be hiked year-round but is at its best from June through to October. Here are the hiking details: Total distance round trip: 15 km Elevation gain: 3100 feet Hiking time: 6-7 hours (round trip) Below are the timestamps: 00:00 Hike Preview 00:09 Elk mountain Parking & Trailhead Once you start the hike, after 100 meters, there is a washroom to the right. The hike is not so steep for the first 1.2 km. 01:10 forest service road You come across a forest service road after 1.6 km or approximately after 30 minutes of the hike. The hike becomes steep after that. 02:27 First viewpoint The first viewpoint is around 3.5 Kms from the trailhead and took us approximately 90 minutes after the start of the hike. The first 3.5 km of the trail travels through the temperate rainforest before arriving at the first scenic viewpoint. From here onwards the trail emerges onto the ridge throughout except for some patches of forests. From the first viewpoint, you get a nice view of the Chilliwack River valley and nearby peaks. 03:00 Elk Mountain lookout & Washroom Elk mountain does not have any designated peak. After the first viewpoint, once you hike another 200-300 meters, you reach another viewpoint/ peak. There is also a washroom there. From here onwards, the trail mostly runs along the ridge full of nearby peaks and viewpoints. After reaching the peak, continue along the trail for approximately 1.5 km to reach a second viewpoint, which is marked by a stone cairn. From here, it is another approx. 2.5 km to reach the peak of Mount Thurston. 03:43 Elk Mountain flags There are a few flags on the Elk mountain ridges and they designate the elk mountain. 03:51 Alpine Meadows & Wildflowers Around this area, you will also see alpine meadows and a lot of wildflowers. During the months of June through August, the meadow is in full bloom. 05:43 Second viewpoint shots We decided not to go until the Thurston peak because there is no viewpoint from the Thurston mountain. So, we stopped almost 2 Kms before the Thurston peak at a location marked by a stone cairn. Here is the link to the blog: https://trekkerpedia.com/hiking-trekk...
