Published on Jul 16, 2013 (Originally on my other channel, americasunhandyman) Candy onion plants I put in on April 8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErCv5S...) are close to being ready for harvest. First time ever, my onions have developed a bad case of Powdery Mildew, or, Peronospora destructor. I also tried a new technique that promised to grow me a bigger bulb. By cutting the tops back several times during the growth cycle. The idea being that more energy would be put into developing a larger bulb instead of being wasted growing leaves. This didn't work. The ones I tried this with were overall smaller than the uncut onions. Each leaf corresponds with one onion ring or layer. Quote from Bruce Frasier, Dixondale Farms; " The larger the leaf, the larger the ring will be when the carbohydrates from the leaves are transferred to the rings of the bulb." end quote. So from this, we can see why my cut leafed onions are smaller than the uncut leafed plants. Won't do this again Links; Bruce Fasier, Dixondale Farms; • How to Select the Correct Onion Variety fo...
