Lhotse, rising 8,516 meters (27,940 ft), is the world’s fourth-highest mountain, located in the Mahalangur range on the Nepal–Tibet border. Its name means “South Peak” in Tibetan, as it sits directly beside Mount Everest, connected by the South Col. Known for its towering Lhotse Face and technical climbing challenges, it demands precision, strength, and courage. Climbers follow Everest’s route through the Khumbu Icefall before branching toward Lhotse’s steep walls. First climbed in 1956 by a Swiss team, it remains a coveted and respected summit, offering one of the most thrilling yet dangerous ascents in the mountaineering world. Hi, I’m @Saila_mingma and I’m on my latest journey as a rope fixer on Lhotse. This is my third time summiting Lhotse, but this year my role was different—I was here to lead the rope fixing team. As we all know, being the first to make a route in any mountain is always the hardest task, but it also brings immense satisfaction, knowing that it makes the climb safer and smoother for those who follow. This year, five of us were responsible for fixing ropes all the way to Lhotse’s summit. We began our work from Camp 4, facing snow and strong winds, but our determination never wavered. I led the team in opening the route, while each member contributed tirelessly. One important task we accomplished was removing all old ropes to prevent confusion and potential accidents. Additionally, we installed two separate ropes from Lhotse summit to nearthe Couloir—one for ascending and one for descending—ensuring climbers could move safely in. Every step we took, every rope we fixed, was a step toward making Lhotse safer for all climbers. Standing there, knowing we had paved the way to the summit, brought a sense of pride and accomplishment that words can hardly describe. Being a part of this team reminded me that in mountaineering, as in life, teamwork, perseverance, and dedication are what turn the impossible into reality.
