Recently the Engine 557 Restoration Company has benefited from some incredibly generous donations! Alaska Roteq Corporation (https://www.akroteq.com/) gifted us with 2 very capable pieces of machinery, a Niigata UMC 2 mill, and a Nagato surface grinder. We have activated the UMC 2, thanks to some more generous donations from Browns Electric (https://www.brownselectric.com) and Kodiak Breakers (https://kodiakbreakers.com/) of the necessary cable, connectors and circuit breakers. This video show the first use of the UMC 2 to machine one of the 557 cross head guides, in order to compensate for wear. 27 thousandths of an inch was all it took to acheive the desired result. For reference the cutter used is 8 inches in diameter. We were cutting only 4-5 thousands of an inch per cut. The UMC 2 did a beautiful job!
