Played on MAME 0.217 Not much to say about this one, it's freaking Gradius I. In spite how of it may seem, there's little to no things I can consider jank on this one. Sure, the laser's fire rate sort of fucks up when you get too close to the right side of the screen, and the way the Options mimic your movement isn't as smooth as later games, but it's not something that drags down the entire game. I don't think this game is "bad" or "dated" unless you deliberately start comparing it to later entries in the series. With that said, the powerup system in Gradius is quite unique in that instead of getting your weapons in a predetermined order, or having to wait for a weapon pickup to cycle until it becomes what you want. Here, it's all dictated by the bar at the bottom of the screen. The power capsules you pick will highlight what's on the bar from left to right, allowing players to choose weapons and become stronger based on their own preference. There are also blue power capsules that appear every 7-10 (I think) normal power capsules, and will instead destroy all minor enemies on the screen. They can be quite annoying IMHO, especially when they screw with your powerup order once you died. While I quite like the innovation, uniqueness and strategy that it brings into the game, I can't help but think that there are some concerning problems with it. However, that's a topic for another day (or better said, another game). The stages in this game are pretty cool, while there isn't too much complexity when it comes to layout or obstacles, they all stand out thanks to being really colorful and having a unique (I think I'm using that word too many times) feeling to them (along with some great tunes). Even when it's something like, Stage 1 but upside down (that's Stage 4 in a nutshell) it still feels like an interesting and curious twist. Stage 5 is probably the lamest one, since it's only killing some weird brains and waiting until the boss arrives. Aside from Stage 6 and 7, you'll always face against Big Core at the end of the levels, which doesn't put up much of a fight but I guess the levels would've ended too abruptly if they didn't have a boss waiting for you. Stage 7 puts you against a brain in a fight that you can't even lose unless you deliberately kill yourself, another Gradius tradition.
