This laptop is a Packard Bell EasyNote A8 from 2004, running Windows XP Home Edition with Microsoft Office 2003 Professional. It’s powered by an Intel Centrino processor, has a 50 GB hard drive, and 1 GB of RAM. I’ve had this laptop since 2020, when I bought it from a friend just before the COVID-19 lockdowns. I needed it for online school during Grade 11 after my main laptop at the time—an HP laptop from 2015 running Windows 8.1—failed. With the pandemic shutting everything down, including local stores in South Africa, I couldn’t buy a new laptop. So, I turned to this Packard Bell with Windows XP, and it became my lifeline for online schooling during the lockdown. Even after schools reopened for in-person learning, I continued using this laptop for projects and homework because of its reliability and surprisingly fast performance for its age. I even used it with 3G dial-up internet for research, as it couldn’t connect to the school’s Wi-Fi. The following year, I finally bought a new laptop; however, I have named this laptop “The Legend” due to the fact that it was able to do so much were my modern tech failed. Despite its age, it kept me going when my modern device couldn’t, helping me successfully finish Grade 11 during the pandemic.
