On November 19, 2024, the historic William E. Higginbotham School began its transformation into a beacon of hope and opportunity for Detroit’s Eight-Mile-Wyoming neighborhood. Built in 1926, the Higginbotham School once stood as a symbol of resilience for Detroit’s Black community during an era of restrictive housing policies. Now, nearly a century later, its legacy continues as it becomes home to 100 affordable housing units, serving households earning 30-80% of the area’s median income. In a moment filled with pride and purpose, URGE Development, community members and city leaders broke ground on the Higginbotham Art Residences—a $35.9 million redevelopment project that combines affordable housing with vibrant cultural expression. This project isn’t just about preserving a historic building—it’s about creating a brighter future for Detroiters.
