On November 19, 2024, the historic William E. Higginbotham School began its transformation into a beacon of hope and opportunity for Detroit’s Eight-Mile-Wyoming neighborhood. Built in 1926, the Higginbotham School once stood as a symbol of resilience for Detroit’s Black community during an era of restrictive housing policies. Now, nearly a century later, its legacy continues as it becomes home to 100 affordable housing units, serving households earning 30-80% of the area’s median income. In a moment filled with pride and purpose, URGE Development, community members and city leaders broke ground on the Higginbotham Art Residences—a $35.9 million redevelopment project that combines affordable housing with vibrant cultural expression. This project isn’t just about preserving a historic building—it’s about creating a brighter future for Detroiters. Featuring art installations by local artists, an outdoor sculpture garden, and community spaces for nonprofits, the Higginbotham Art Residences will weave together housing, art, and community into a space that uplifts and inspires.
