And Mainz was simply stunning. And the snow made it even more magical. Mainz sits on the beds of the Rhine river in Germany, near France. It has history of over 2000 years. Dating from the Celts through the Romans to medieval times till today. This is German wine capital: it is surrounded by Germany's largest wine growing region. A nod to that can be seen in the wonderful Mainz Christmas Markets where they put up a Christmas Village of Wine Barrels where you can wine and dine under the comforting watch of the Mainz Cathedral. The romanesque Cathedral has a foundation stone from the year 975 AD. The Gutenberg Museum honors the inventor of the printing press. The goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg had invented the printing press around the year 1436. The Mainz citizen began experimenting with printing in Strasbourg and made the first press when he returned to his home town of Mainz. Cathedral The largest of the Mainz Christmas Markets is located around the Cathedral. There are several squares, connected, which offer a most wonderful Christmas stroll. Along huts with mulled wine and chestnuts from an open fire, hand crafted goods, flammküchen, christmas ornament shops and much more. And of course the quintessential German Christmas Pyramid: rotating, wooden pyramid with figurines. Schillerplaz A smaller christmas market. With a cute german christmas pyramid in the middle. Kirschgarten The famous half-timbered houses of Mainz. White plaster and red wooden beams. The Cherry Garden with buildings dating back to the 1500's. Architectural beauty. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, indeed.
