Dr Anita Sethi from Synergy Eye Care explains about Ectropion, it’s causes, symptoms and treatment. Ectropion of the eyelid is the rolling out of the eyelid margin. This may be of varying degrees, starting from just a mild outward positioning to when the eyelids completely fall away from the eyeball. When the eyelid falls away from the eyeball and it completely exposes the front part of the eye, the cornea and the front surface. And this leads to a lot of watering and redness and even discharge. And if the cornea gets infected, they can be pain and loss of vision. This is due to the condition is due to imbalance in the tissues of the eyelid. It can be seen in old age where it is called a Senile Ectropion, which is due to the stretching and the weakening of all the eyelid tissues. It can also be seen in paralysis of the 7th nerve and sometimes in chemical or burn injuries due to the scarring. The most dangerous part of this disease is where their is the scarring because then the eyeball is completely exposed and at risk to getting infected. The treatment for Ectropion is surgical. Surgical treatment will involve the strengthening of the muscles and restoring the tissue balances. And often we need to do grafts because there is loss of tissue, as in Burns or accidents. There is loss of tissue and we have to replace it with skin grafts or mucous membrane grafts. Skin grafts are taken from behind the ear, sometimes from the other eyelids, from the inner arm, the inner thigh. And they take very well and the recovery is very good. And even mucous membrane graft we take from the lip or the cheek. Again, very good recovery. So, in Synergy, we have experienced Oculoplastic surgeons who have done many such cases and we get very good results.
