Peter Harrison: 21st Century Legacies of the Protestant Reformation

Summary: Historians are generally agreed that the Protestant Reformation played a significant role in the shaping of Western Modernity. There is less consensus, however, on the precise nature of its legacy and whether on balance its impact has been positive or negative. In this talk I consider a number of ways in which the Reformation influenced contemporary Western societies, including its impact on the development of science, on how we now conceptualise religion and, more broadly, on our attitudes to the natural world. Bio: Peter Harrison is a former Professor of Science and Religion at the University of Oxford. He was subsequently the inaugural director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Queensland and an Australian Laureate Fellow, 2015-2021. His research deals mostly with the historical relations among science, religion, and philosophy. His twelve books include The Territories of Science and Religion (Chicago,2015) based on his 2011 Gifford Lectures, After Science and Religion (Cambridge, 2022), co-edited with John Milbank, and Some New World (Cambridge, 2024).
