Sky News host Peta Credlin says it appears the boundaries of free speech are “getting narrower all the time” as cancel culture impacts whether people are willing to reveal their opinions. “Now worryingly, this self-censorship is most pronounced amongst the young,” she said. Ms Credlin referred to a study published by social analyst Mark McCrindle and Mainstream Insights, which revealed how cancel culture is affecting peoples’ “readiness to say what they really think”. “40 per cent of people under 30 say they are careful of who they share their opinions with. “And it's 37 per cent of people aged 30 and 40 years of age. “On the other hand, older people – the baby boomers and more – are much less influenced by cancel culture and they don't like political correctness.” Ms Credlin said the “basic problem” with this is the fear of “giving offence to militant groups because of the resultant social media storm, and the reluctance to face the scorn of everyone who'd rather just go with the flow”. “All this political correctness sure gets under peoples’ skins – but hardly anyone is prepared to become a pariah by publicly questioning it.”
