So... you have read your manual, you have tried some stuff, and now you want to make "something useful." Why not make a small panel that will become a ball, or in this case a pumpkin. What are the alternate uses - well... If you have a cat, and cat nip - a cat toy. If you have a small baby - a infant toy (make sure you stuff well and sew well) If you use bar soap - you can make this with Wool and cover a bar of soap - makes a soap sock which will help the soap last longer and look neat. You can stuff this ball with 100% wool and make a Dryer ball. Bonus points if you use yarn that is 100% wool to knit with. You can sew this up any way you want. Sometimes I sew the side seams first, then I pull the top and bottom closed - there is no rules saying you have to do any one thing first. You seam it the way you want.
