Bart Streumer is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Groningen, specializing in ethics and political philosophy. In this talk he shows that our ideas about equality seem to presuppose that people are often responsible for what they do. He then argues that people are never responsible for anything they do. His conclusion is that we can promote equality by changing our beliefs about responsibility. Bart Streumer studied philosophy at the University of Groningen and at the University of Reading in the UK, where he obtained his doctorate in 2003 with a thesis entitled 'Reasons, Reasoning, and Free Will'. From 2002 tot 2005 he was a research fellow at the the University of Cambridge. He subsequently taught at the University of Reading for eight years, before returning to Groningen in 2013. His research is mainly in a philosophical field called ‘metaethics': it is about whether moral judgements are beliefs or some other kind of attitude, and about whether there is anything objective about morality. But he is also interested in many other topics in ethics and political philosophy. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
