After the Storm from the album - Cullercoats Bay ...of smugglers, shipwrecks and lifeboats. Relax and enjoy the music and the mesmerising and peaceful scenes of the sunrise at Tynemouth Haven Cullercoats, Whitley Bay, Tynemouth. Cullercoats Bay is a picturesque, horseshoe-shaped sandy bay in North Tyneside, England, situated between Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. Sheltered by cliffs and two small piers, it is a popular spot for families, water sports, and coastal walks. The area has a rich history as a former fishing village and a 19th-century artists' colony. The secluded, crescent-shaped beach is enclosed by cliffs that contain small caves, including a rock arch at the southern end. When the tide is low, rock pools can be explored, but visitors should be mindful of the tide, as high tide can split the beach in two. The sheltered waters are ideal for swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking. The southern end of the bay is also used as a launch site for recreational watercraft and small fishing boats called cobles. Harbour and village: Cullercoats was once a thriving port for exporting coal and salt in the 17th century. Though the coal and salt industries declined, the fishing industry continued, and two piers were built in the 19th century to shelter the fishing boats. Today, the village retains a strong fishing heritage and provides amenities like cafés, pubs, and shops. RNLI Lifeboat Station: A working Victorian-era RNLI Lifeboat Station is located in the harbour. Dove Marine Laboratory: Situated on the bay, this important research centre for Newcastle University's School of Marine Science is a notable landmark. History and culture Origin: The village of Cullercoats was founded in 1539. Its name may have originated from "culver cotes," or "dove cotes," as the land was once owned by Tynemouth Priory, which kept pigeons. Artists' colony: In the 19th century, Cullercoats became a renowned artists' colony, attracting painters with its rugged coastal scenery and fishing community life. The American artist Winslow Homer famously lived and worked here for 18 months. An art trail highlights the village's artistic legacy.
