Yerba Santa is an "evergreen" plant with sawtoothed or scalloped leaves that often take on a grayish-green appearance, especially as the leaves get older and near the end of their lives. This plant is just weird-looking out in the dense chaparral: it has gray, fat, fuzzy leaves with nice veins and shape, but they only seem to grow at the end of very long and lanky branches. This shrub fails to create an effective canopy like other shrubs do in the chaparral; thus, understory plants can encroach on its territory. Yerba Santa grows up to 2.5 meters tall. The scientific name of this plant means "woolly net thick leaves." Yerba Santa leaves look kind of alien and gross to me due to the coloration and hairy leaves. It's definitely not something I would put in my mouth if I had to make that choice out in the wild. However, it does have anti-inflammatory properties and seems to help soothe respiratory system ailments and diseases, as well as fevers.
