This is a presentation by Martin Twer, Biomass Project Coordinator for the Watershed Center, given for the Fire Adapted Communities Learning Network Wood Utilization Community of Practice. Wood Wool Cement (WWC) was developed and commercialized in Europe in the early 1900's, decades before it made it into the US market, where it is currently limited to acoustic ceiling and wall panels, but offers a much wider range and higher volume of potential applications, e.g. as pre-fab (i.e. factory-built) full wall elements and highway noise barriers. The only ingredients for the material are strands from small-diameter softwood trees (e.g. Excelsior) encased in ordinary Portland cement (OPC). The finished product is fire, moisture, vermin, and termite resistant, has highly desirable thermal (insulating and thermal mass) as well as acoustic performance characteristics, lends itself to factory-built construction, and has comparatively low specific mass.
