From Fossils To Gemstones: Exploring The Prairie's Treasures

Come along with Chopper and I as we take in the views of Montana's vast prairie lands and look for cool rocks and fossils! We started out in a formation known as the Fox Hills Formation. I wanted to find evidence of the Western Interior Seaway, a time when Montana was covered by an inland sea. We continued on through the Hell Creek Formation, then finding the Pierre Shale Formation. After a close encounter with a large prairie rattlesnake, we head over to rockhound in a creek in the prairie badlands. We find wonderful agates, jaspers infused with hematite and petrified wood. Here is a link to a great book if you are wanting to learn more about the geology of Montana. It is quite a helpful tool to use while you are rockhounding.
