It's 2020, during the pandemic, and full lockdown in England had not long been relaxed, and here at RescueSkills, unable to carry out any first aid training, we were taking advantage of it to get the Safety and Rescue boat out for some initial sea trials after its refurbishment. This was the boats second day out, and having experienced some issues with the engine trim on the initial run, the engine has now been jacked up slightly on the transom to see if it alleviates some of the handling and ventilation/cavitation issues. In this short video we are in Southampton Water again, on a quieter day for large ships, with just the one large container vessel being brought into Southampton Docks by the tugs. After some testing, and a brief visit into the slipway at Hamble to do some adjustments, we then head up to Lee-on-the-Solent, where whilst waiting for the Shack Shacks informal swimming group( / 355478407912498 ) to congregate, a military Wildcat helicopter took off from Solent Airport (the former HMS Daedalus RNAS), and flew straight overhead. We then followed the swimmers for a while around high tide to provide some safety cover for them (although being single manned due to social distancing rules, we couldn't offer full safety boat services), and to see how the two stroke engine performed at slow swimming speeds. Traditionally two strokes don't like idling for long periods - they tend to oil up the plugs and misfire, but with a modern engine, in good condition the RescueSkills engine performed faultlessly. We then headed back down to Southampton for boat retrieval. The quality isn't fantastic I'm afraid - it's filmed on a £24.99 action camera! The annoying clicking you can hear turned out to be the shutter button rattling in the casing! First aid training isn't a rich mans vocation - I'd love to be able to afford a decent GoPro, but we don't make enough money.
