In the early literary salons of Lucknow and Delhi, Urdu poetry spoke of love in ways far more complex and daring than we often remember today. From Rekhti and amrad-parasti to the boy-beloved tradition of Persian and Urdu ghazals, same-sex desire was neither invisible nor unspeakable. This video begins with a provocative moment from Insha Allah Khan ‘Insha’ and traces how homoerotic expression existed openly in pre-modern Urdu culture—sometimes playful, sometimes spiritual, and often deeply human. We explore how poets like Wali Dakhni, Mir Taqi Mir, Atish, Qaim Chandpuri, Mushafi, and even the Persian master Hafez wrote verses addressed to young male beloveds. In a world shaped by male-only social spaces, these expressions were part of everyday literary life, not identities but social practices—interwoven with patriarchy, mysticism, and aesthetics. Sufi thought further transformed homoerotic imagery into metaphors for divine beauty and spiritual longing. The video then turns to the colonial rupture after 1857, Victorian morality, Section 377, and literary reformers like Hali—marking the gradual disappearance of such themes from mainstream Urdu poetry. From Ismat Chughtai’s Lihaaf in prose to rare modern couplets and the bold voice of Iftikhar Nasim, we ask: what did we stop reading, and why? Homosexuality in Urdu Poetry is an invitation to reread the canon with honesty, context, and courage.
