Feb 2, 2026 - Calm water and a very low tide reveal hidden underwater obstacles near the shore in CC Bay at Surfside Park on North Beach. Swimmers visiting this new park and bathhouse should be made aware of these for public safety because it's easy to get really scraped up on them if you're not aware that they're present. This video (shot at a -0.7 foot tide) shows the old barnacle-encrusted pilings above the water but at a normal tide, they are submerged and often hard to see. The old railroad rails (not ties, as I called them in the videos) are on the bottom just 2 or 3 feet under the surface. In the 1800s and early 1900s there was a railroad depot on North Beach where Surfside Park is now. At that time, a pier ran out into the bay and was used to load cargo from boats onto railroad cars to be shipped inland via train. In the mid 1900s, after the railroad depot was long gone, Paradise Pier was built in this same location in the bay for fishing, swimming and sightseeing. In the early 1900s, when the railroad depot was here, one of the guest tourist resorts was located just north of Surfside Park where Villa del Sol condos is now located. It was called Epworth By the Sea and was a private Methodist encampment. People from all over the region would take the train to North Beach, get off at the Depot and spend a few days enjoying the beach and attending revivals at Epworth.
