Bangladesh has entered one of its most decisive political phases since the historic student-led uprising that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Election Commission has officially announced February 12 as the date for the national parliamentary polls, marking the country’s first general election after the dramatic events of last year. Alongside this, a nationwide referendum will take place on the same day to determine whether the proposed “July Charter” should form the foundation of sweeping political and institutional reforms. Interim Prime Minister Muhammad Yunus faces mounting pressure as his administration struggles to deliver the reforms promised after Hasina’s departure. With Hasina’s party barred from the contest, analysts warn that frustrations could ignite fresh unrest as campaign activities pick up. Political temperatures rose further when President Mohammed Shahabuddin declared he would step down after the election, saying he felt humiliated under the new administration. Nearly 128 million voters will cast ballots for 300 parliamentary seats across more than 42,000 polling stations, making this one of the largest electoral exercises in Asia. The referendum on the July Charter aims to reshape executive authority, strengthen judicial independence and curb misuse of law enforcement. The race is expected to be dominated by the BNP, while Jamaat-e-Islami returns to electoral politics after a decade. Meanwhile, the new student-led National Citizen Party struggles to expand beyond its protest roots. With democratic restoration, economic revival and foreign relations at stake, Bangladesh’s February 12 vote could redefine the nation’s political future. #BangladeshElection #BangladeshPolitics #BNP #MuhammadYunus #SheikhHasina #JulyCharter #BangladeshVote #SouthAsia #Democracy #Dhaka #IndiaTodayGlobal India Today Global is an India-based news channel that serves as an international arm of India's prominent media organization.
