Respiratory infections are extremely common in pediatric population, both among otherwise healthy children and children with cronic underlying disease. In both cases, claims professor Susanna Esposito, President WAidid, the priority is to avoid the unnecessary use of antibiotics, that is to say to reduce their use orto use antibiotics which are recommended by guidelines for a specific ID. As well known, the abuse of antibiotics has as its consequence the increase in antimicrobial resistance among colonizing pathogens. On the other side, also the misuse (prescription of antibiotics different from those recommended) could represent a problem, as it is - for example - for patients with cystic fibrosis, in case of multiresistant pathogens (MRSA or pseudomonas aeruginosa).
