Max Richter – Europe, After the Rain (Arr. for Piano Solo) This is my solo piano arrangement of “Europe, After the Rain”, composed by Max Richter and originally featured on his debut solo album Memoryhouse (2002), released by FatCat’s 130701 label. The piece is a poignant example of Richter’s early “documentary music” style—combining minimalist textures, ambient drama, and classical lyricism to evoke deep emotional landscapes. Memoryhouse was recorded with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and marked a significant turning point in Richter’s career. It showcased his gift for blending classical tradition with contemporary influences, creating music that speaks both to personal memory and collective history. Europe, After the Rain, alongside other tracks like “The Twins (Prague),” “Fragment,” and “Embers,” was later featured in the BBC documentary Auschwitz: The Nazis and the Final Solution—highlighting its emotional weight and cinematic depth. Interestingly, the title “Europe, After the Rain” may also allude to the renowned painting of the same name by Max Ernst. Created between 1940 and 1942, Ernst’s surrealist masterpiece portrays a haunting, apocalyptic landscape—a metaphor for a continent shattered by war, yet in the process of transformation. The painting, held at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut, uses subconscious imagery to reflect on destruction, survival, and the eerie beauty of regeneration.
