✅ Chasm Lake is a classic, must-do Colorado hike. I think it is one of the best hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park. You'll get incredible views while traversing the subalpine forest up to the alpine tundra. The lake sits below the spectacular Longs Peak, the highest peak in the park. You'll start at Long's Peak Trailhead and hike along the Long's Peak Trail. This trailhead is very popular and becomes full early in the morning. Weather conditions on this route can change to severe, storming, or wintery at any time (even in the summer). Afternoon thunderstorms arrive without warning. Getting an early start for this trip is essential to return to areas below the treeline before storms begin. Cell service is not very good. It is a good idea to download your offline map ahead of time. After a steady climb, you'll reach the beautiful alpine environment above the tree line. Chasm Lake itself is above the treeline. In early summer, these higher-elevation sections are often covered in snow, requiring winter equipment such as snowshoes, microspikes, or crampons. After turning left onto the Chasm Lake Trail, you'll continue until the route becomes a rock scramble through a boulder field.
