Learn more about lung cancer at http://www.YouAndLungCancer.org Dr. Madhuri Rao, a general thoracic surgeon, explains what patients can expect during and after lung cancer surgery. Before surgery, you will meet your care team, including the surgeon, anesthesia team, and nurses, who will review details, answer questions, and make sure you are prepared. The length of surgery depends on the type of surgery and your overall health. A small wedge resection may take less than an hour, while a lobectomy or full lung removal can take several hours. Family members receive regular updates throughout. After surgery, you will wake up in recovery, usually with a chest tube to drain fluid and air, before moving to a hospital room. Most patients stay one to three days, but some may go home the same day if their X-ray looks good and pain is well managed. Pain control, early walking, and breathing exercises are key to recovery.
