For 60 or more years, this community in Sitio Buacao (Barangay Toong, Cebu), uses the conch, locally known as budyong, to call their neighbors and let them know the arrival of the priest and when the mass, prayer meeting, or any faith-related gathering is about to start. San Roque Chapel leader Francisca Ubanan said those living as far as one kilometer away could hear the budyong sound. Fr. Mhar Balili, parish priest of Mary Help of Christians said the conch is a treasure for the community and a testament of their unity in their Catholic faith. He goes there to do the mass at least once a month - which means some 20-minute drive from his parish in Buhisan and another 20-minute hike, more or less, up and down the hills and through a couple of creeks.
