The Gordons had a huge conflict with the nearby Forbes clan and had for generations. Auchindoun Castle was owned by Sir Adam Gordon. Adam was Catholic and a staunch supporter of Mary Queen of Scots. The Forbes of Towie had become Protestant and supported the infant James who had become king after his mother had been forced to abdicate the throne. The Marian war, as it became known, that coupled religion and politics had made the Gordon's and the Forbes even greater enemies. In November of 1571 Adam Gordon set fire to Lord John Forbes of Towie's home ending the life of his wife and 27 other men, women and children. Auchindoun castle was burned in retaliation for this event.
