The Overland Track, Tasmania - 26 Nov - 1 Dec 2025

Our adventure on Tasmania's Overland Track was a remarkable blend of challenge and wonder. Firstly, let me preface this by saying this was our first ever multi-day hike. This isn't a brag by any means because we very quickly came to learn (by mid-day of Day 1 that things could go very wrong. Our journey began with thorough preparation (or so we thought), watching countless YouTube vide)os to reading heaps of posts in this wonderful Facebook Group. We only really started taking it seriously once we got our park passes. Booking the park passes was an adventure of its own, involving a bit of a digital lottery, we both logged in simultaneously, and I got the lower queue number, which ultimately secured our dates. In terms of equipment, we relied heavily on rented gear, including our sleeping bags and mats. Our rain jackets were indispensable, especially on the first couple of days when we encountered snow, heavy rain and strong winds that pushed us off the track on multiple occasions. Trekking poles were also a game-changer, providing stability and reducing strain on our knees during steep climbs and descents. I'm not going to lie. On Day 1 and Day 3, I did consider dumping my photography gear behind as I was carrying close to 30kgs (or maybe more) given how drenched I was with the rain. It became evident that our level of preparation was nowhere near enough. Most YouTube videos showcase the beauty of the track but for the untrained and inexperienced, it was tough for us with some sections being fairly technical especially with all the water. It required extra focus to ensure we weren't rolling our ankles or slipping on wet roots and rocks. The huts along the track were well-designed, with separate equipment rooms and cosy communal areas, ensuring we always had a place to rest and dry off. We never struggled to find space, even when we arrived late. We were always the last to arrive and even then, we found spots in the huts to bunk in. The newer huts accommodate up to 34 sleepers while older huts like Bert Nichols allowed for 24 hikers. The 3 new huts, Waterfall Valley, Windermere and Kia Ora were very well built with separate sections for your equipment, a community room for your food prep and multiple bunk rooms that slept around 10-12 hikers each. Pelion Hut did not have a specific section for gear and you want to be careful leaving gear on the perimeter deck as the wildlife do try to get into your packs. Bert Nichols was the oldest hut we stayed in and most hikers opted to sleep in tents instead which meant ample room but we quickly understood why. With rats in the kitchen, leeches in the equipment area and no lights, it was a stark contrast from the newer huts. It also felt extremely cold in Bert Nichols. Beyond the gear and the landscape, the people we met truly made the journey special. We connected with a wonderful group of five hikers who checked in on us daily, offering help and guidance. On day three, when it was starting to get dark and we had not yet made our appearance to the hut, two young lads even considered backtracking to find us, a gesture that meant the world to us. We also met a young runner practicing for his trail run, who appeared out of nowhere on Day 3 and encouraged us with a cheerful smile, reminding us that we were almost there. Again on Day 3 when we rocked up just before dark at Pelion Hut, a lovely hiker made it a point to check that we had found a spot to sleep in. These moments of human connection, whether it was shared tips, stories about wildlife, or just encouraging words, truly enriched our experience. It was evident that we had the least experience amongst everyone we met along the way but each and everyone were kind and thoughtful. No one was pompous or big-headed and we genuinely felt encouraged every step of the way. In the end, the Overland Track wasn’t just about the stunning landscapes or the physical challenges; it stripped back all the facades and distractions of everyday living and simplified life as a whole to the most important facets of food, water, shelter, time in nature and purposeful human interaction.
