In this episode of Good Roots, we travel to the small town of Grady to meet the Carpenter family. The Carpenter family has been farming in the Delta for 50 years. It began with a single acre and grew to 1200 acres with 35 family members keeping it going. The business side has been managed by Abraham Carpenter Jr. since he was 12 years old. We’ll talk to him about the struggles and triumphs he has experienced, not only as a farmer, but as a Black farmer. This month, stimulus funds allocated to minority farmers are being distributed, and debts are being forgiven, and for Abraham Carpenter, this is a victory after a long-fought battle. About the show: This spring, something new is blooming at Arkansas PBS – a segment featuring stories of life and innovation from small towns in every corner of the state. “Good Roots,” explores rural community life, agribusiness and how these things are evolving through modern advances. “Good Roots,” produced in partnership with Arkansas Farm Bureau, seeks to shine a light on Arkansas’s rich rural culture and communities. Segments focus on the real stories of rural life, while addressing relevant topics like agriculture, health care, the economy, technology, policy and more. The segment premieres April 16 and beginning in May, it will air on the second Friday of each month. Learn more at https://myarpbs.org/GoodRoots.
