There is a problem with the diagnosis of neoplasia in the upper GI tract. In a recent registry based study from Poland with 4 million patients looking at 6 million endoscopies in 6% of cases there were missed UGI cancer diagnoses in patients who underwent a “normal” endoscopy in the preceding 3 - 36 months. In this 7-minute micro lecture, Prof Raf Bisschops, Secretary- General of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and former chairman of the ESGE quality committee discusses the problems with the diagnosis of neoplasia in the upper GI tract and what you can do to optimise detection, including the use of advanced imaging, appropriate cleaning and visualisation times.
