How to Pollinate Pawpaw Trees by Hand

This is a video showing how to pollinate pawpaw (Asimina triloba) flowers by hand to avoid problems with pollinators and increase yields. In some orchards, pollination will be a limiting factor for fruit production. Ideally, an orchard will have 30-50 or more pawpaw trees, and be in a sheltered site with low wind speeds. If you only have a few trees and some spare time, you can pollinate flowers by hand using a paint brush or cotton swab. Just make sure the pollen is coming from a different tree than the one you're pollinating. Hand pollinating may help you grow more pawpaws if your trees aren't producing fruit. You can also use this technique to intentionally cross plants but additional bagging may be needed to keep insects out. Don't worry about that unless you're doing some specific breeding work.
