Twelve years ago in Syria, Naim Shakir witnessed the chemical weapons attack carried out by the Bashar al-Assad regime in the Eastern Ghouta district of the capital Damascus. Shakir recalled: "Neither video recordings, nor documents, nor words can convey what we lived through that night. Nothing can express the spiritual, physical, and mental impact of that moment." An engineer and a survivor of the chemical massacre, Shakir recounted his experience to an Anadolu Agency correspondent. Having lost nine family members in the attack, he witnessed the full horror of the chemical assault. Afterwards, he was subjected to torture in the regime’s prisons under false accusations. Shakir survived both the deadly toxic gases and the darkness of detention. — “The interrogations were pure theater” Shakir recalled that the deposed regime blamed him for the chemical attack in the Zamalka and Ayn Tarma districts of Eastern Ghouta: "I spent about ten and a half months in regime prisons, most notably in the Palestine Branch facility." He said he spent four months in solitary confinement and six and a half months in an overcrowded cell: "The interrogations were about the chemical attack—how it was carried out, how it was produced, what our objectives were."
